DURHAM, N.C. — The government wants more than $70,000 from Kathleen Peterson's estate.
The Internal Revenue Service claims Mike Peterson cashed in four life insurance policies after his wife's murder. Then, they say Peterson filed a joint tax return in the couple's name and never claimed the insurance money as income.
Caitlin Atwater, Kathleen's Peterson's daughter, plans to appeal.
Mike Peterson is serving a life sentence for his wife's murder.
