Demolition Set To Begin On Heart Of Durham Motel

DURHAM, N.C. — The Heart of Durham is about to become history.

City leaders celebrated the start of demolition of the old motel Thursday. The building has been boarded up and abandoned since the mid-90s.

"People will believe downtown revitalization a little bit more when they finally see the building come down," said Bill Kalkoff, of Downtown Durham Inc.

City leaders plan to replace the building with a transportation center.

Construction on the transportation hub should start next fall.
