Police say 18-year-old Paul Thomas Foster and 16-year-old Derrick Rashad Daniels were involved in an altercation after 11 a.m. at Athens Drive High School. Authorities say the fight started off-campus and moved on campus.
Both teenagers are students at the school. After the altercation was reported, students were kept in their classrooms.
"I was a big shock to me and my family," said Janet Brown, Derrick's mother. "I'm going to support my son to the very end."
Foster was stabbed in the abdomen and taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.
Parents were alerted to the incident by voice-mail and a letter sent home by students.
"We want to ensure them that this was an incident that happened off-campus between two students. We reacted quickly and cooperated with authorities. It appears to be an isolated incident," Wake County school spokesman Michael Evans said.
Daniels was taken into custody by police at his home. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held in the Wake County Jail on $25,000 bond.
Brown said her son had had problems with Foster in the past. Foster's father said his son was having a problem with Daniels.
