RALEIGH, N.C. — The

Wake County Public School System

released a list Thursday of 30 elementary schools being considered for temporary conversion to year-round schedules to handle rapid enrollment growth.

The schools are:

Because school enrollment numbers for the current school year have not been certified by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, this list could be changed.

The school board is discussing temporary year-round assignments next school year following two years of student population growth significantly higher than county projections and state-mandated class size reduction in third grade. WCPSS must find additional space for about 4,200 elementary and 1,200 high school students.

Each of the schools on the list released Thursday have more than 20 percent of the students in mobile classrooms.

The board meets Oct. 5 to consider the year-round conversions and other options aimed at placing more students in permanent classrooms. The board also will consider:

  • Adding mobile units and modular classroom units
  • Leasing property to be retrofitted or used as a site for a modular school
  • Reducing, eliminating or outsourcing some program services
  • Building a modular ninth-grade center
