DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police officers arrested 24-year-old Lazaro Andres Martinez Thursday on murder charges for the death of 15-year-old Cristen Carter of Hillsborough.
Carter was found dead on May 14 outside her home on U.S. 70 near Hillsborough in Orange County.
Martinez was arrested on May 14 by Durham police officers and charged with statutory rape of Carter. He was also charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Investigators believe the incidents occurred at a Howard Johnson motel on Hillandale Road in the hours before Carter was found dead.
Martinez posted bond on those charges and was released from the Durham County Jail on August 15. On Sept. 15, a grand jury indicted Martinez on murder charges.
