Raleigh's Roundabout Discussion To Come 'Full Circle'

RALEIGH, N.C. — Members of the Raleigh City Council will talk Tuesday about a plan to include roundabouts on Hillsborough Street, but the plan does not come without some debate.

The city is looking at the plan in hopes of revitalizing the street as well as a way to slow traffic and improve parking.

One proposal calls for part of Hillsborough Street to go from four lanes to two lanes with eight roundabouts that would help slow traffic.

On Sunday, some city council members went to Hillsborough Street to see how roundabouts would look and work, and some still are not sure the roundabouts are the way to go.

"My fear is we only do one roundabout and the city and street are forever impacted if we don't do the three to five to nine – or the ultimate plan was to do 11," said council member Philip Isley.

The proposal also includes creating 80 additional parking spots.
