Raleigh Assistant City Manager Taken From Jail To Hospital

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Assistant City Manager Lawrence Wray was ordered to go to jail, but right now, the 60-year-old is in the hospital with chest pains.

Wray was arrested Wednesday afternoon at City Hall. A judge ordered Wray to 20 days in jail for violating a court order. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said Wray's violation involves a property settlement with his ex-wife.

Thursday, Wray was taken from the jail to a hospital complaining of pain. He is listed in good condition.

Meeker said his arrest is not the kind of image the city wants to project.

"Everyone ought to follow the rules of the law from the mayor going on down, so that's a matter of concern. At the same time, we've got to be realistic," he said. "Here's a long-term employee involved in a domestic dispute, and things got out of hand."

Wray has been a city employee for about 30 years and the assistant city manager for about 20 years. He is also chief executive officer of the Capital Area Sports Foundation.

Raleigh City Manager Russell Allen said he wants to talk to Wray and his attorney before making any decisions on his employment status.
