The Super Bowl is the biggest event of the year for television advertisers. Now, a locally produced commercial might be one of the spots aired on CBS the night of Feb. 4.

With roller blades, a car and a camera, Wes Phillips and his buddy Dale Backus produced the spot in the parking lot of Cary’s Waverly Place. They asked Backus' wife Cori and their friend Nick Dimondi to star in the 30-second commercial. They had just four days to complete the project. (View the Commercial)

The winner of the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest will see their 30-second spot air during the Super Bowl. The five finalists will receive $10,000 apiece.

“It ended up being a 30-second romantic comedy,” Phillips said. “Girls like it for that reason. Guys like it because a girl hits her head on the car at the end.”

The pair launched 5 Point Productions from the Phillips family home two months ago with the help of Phillips' brother, Barrett. The commercial had a working budget of $12, which covered four bags of chips. ("The Doritos Story" Blog)

“Oh, it's $10,000 we might have a shot at it,” said Backus. “We're broke right now. Give it a shot.”

On Friday, the partners found out that they're not broke anymore. They made the cut for the final 5 finalists.

The entire group will travel to Miami for the Super Bowl. Doritos will announce the winner during the game and air the ad.

"Just to think, we've produced a $12 potential Super Bowl commercial,” Wes Phillips said. “Blows my mind."

Need to develop a get out the vote campaign. Currently they are in 2nd place. First place has about 200 votes more than the local guys.

Nice job! I really liked the choice of music, use of sound effects, and the actor's and actress's facial expressions! The Doritos' bag that acts as an air bag and sprays out chips is a very clever idea. I'll keep voting for this commercial.

That was the funniest thing! The ending is totally the best!!! Great job and good luck!

Thanks a lot guys for all your support. We here at 5 Point are very very grateful for everyone that has voted and continues to vote and spread the word. There is some good competition - so we need all the help we can get! Thanks!

You must be the winners by far
