Easley Signature Removes Barbed Wire From Benson Apartment Complex

Posted Updated

BENSON, N.C. — A controversial barbed-wire fence around a Johnston County apartment complex is coming down.

Gov. Mike Easley signed a bill that bans barbed wire from surrounding any public housing development in the state.

The Benson Housing Authority put the fence around the Raymond Sanders Community two years ago. Managers said the barbed wire helped reduce crime, but some residents said it made them feel like they lived in prison.
