RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh Police Chief Jane Perlov had surgery for
breast cancer
Thursday.
A police representative said Perlov is out of the hospital and came through the procedure very well. Her doctors did not find any additional evidence of cancer.
Perlov is using the experience to urge women to do monthly breast exams and get regular check-ups. She hopes that by talking about her situation, she will increase awareness.
"She didn't volunteer for the role, but it's a role she has now, and she will embrace that," police attorney Dawn Bryant said.
Deputy Chief Clarence Lewis will fill in during Perlov's absence.
