Weldon Man In Custody After Shooting At Day Care

print friendly

A Halifax County man faces several charges for allegedly chasing a woman through a day care on Wednesday and shooting her in the leg in front of dozens of children and witnesses.

Investigators said Bruce Jarrett, of Weldon, walked into the Weldon Daycare with a 20-gauge sawed-off shotgun and threatened a woman identified as Ebony Lane.

Eyewitnesses said Jarrett chased Lane through the day care with at least 30 infants and employees present.

Lane reportedly ran out of a door and into the parking lot, and Jarrett followed her. He then shot her from behind in the right calf while she was holding her 6-month-old baby.

The baby was not hurt.

Lane is in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. But her condition is not known.

Jarrett fled the scene on foot. He was apprehended about three city blocks away, where he surrendered without incident.

Jarrett is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, going armed to the terror of the people and possession of weapons of mass destruction. He has a first court appearance on Sept. 8.
