SANFORD, N.C. — A Sanford police officer turned school resource officer is charged in a scheme to rip off a local home improvement store.

Authorities say Darryl Thompson sometimes showed up in uniform and took items from Lowes away in his patrol car. He has been suspended with pay.

Police said Tiki Berryman, a clerk at Lowes, did not ring up costly items. Two other people have been charged in the incident.
