Series Of Wrecks Cause Problems In Johnston County

, located on Highway 301 North in Kenly, closed at 10 a.m. as a precaution due to a fuel leak from an overturned tanker about a half mile from the school.

All sports activities at the school have been canceled for the rest of the day.

"As more information rolled in, and, of course, still working very closely with emergency management services, we found there was a small leak and we just decided to err on the side of caution," said Crystal Roberts of Johnston County Schools.

"I think they made the right decision. You got to be safe around school," student Dale Price said.

The tanker overturned at Oak Grove Inn Road and Trailer Park Road after it was detoured around a head-on collision around 6:30 a.m. in front of Beulah in the Pines trailer park, located between the towns of Micro and Kenly.

Four people were involved in the head-on wreck that happened during heavy fog.

Johnston County dispatchers say one person was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to Duke Medical Center by LifeFlight. A child suffered minor injuries.

The tanker was carrying about 8,000 gallons of fuel. Officials say about 10 gallons spilled out into the road. A hazardous materials crew from Rocky Mount was dispatched to offload fuel from the truck.

Officials say some fuel made its way into a creek located near the high school.

The driver of the tanker was not injured.

Oak Grove Inn Road, which connects Watson Road to Highway 301, reopened at 3 p.m. North Johnston High School will also be back on a normal schedule Wednesday.
