DARE COUNTY, N.C. — Dare County's brush with Hurricane Alex caused millions in property damage.
In a preliminary estimate released Friday,
county officials
reported $2.4 million in damage to real property. The estimate does not include damage to personal property, such as cars.
Following damage assessment Wednesday and Thursday, it is estimated 275 to 300 cars in the county suffered serious damage as a result of the storm. Seventeen single-family residences were damaged. If Gov. Mike Easley issues a State of Disaster declaration for Dare County, state financial assistance may be made available to eligible families and businesses to assist them in recovering from the disaster.
The damage figures do not include Ocracoke Island in Hyde County, which bore the brunt of the storm.
There is no word yet on Ocracoke totals, although hundreds of cars were damaged there, as well.
