FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County authorities are investigating a shooting incident that they said happened at a local high school Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators said a gunshot was fired shortly after 3 p.m. near the entrance to Westover High School on Bonanza Drive.

Witnesses said a single shot struck the vehicle of a student who was leaving campus. The driver and two passengers inside the vehicle were uninjured, sheriff's investigators said.

The shooter, authorities said, fled the scene on foot.

Investigators said the shooting might have stemmed from a disturbance that happened earlier Tuesday, but it was not clear if the disturbance was at the school or elsewhere.

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.
