Wake Forest Wal-Mart Opens Despite Opposition

Posted July 21, 2004

— After months of heated debate and construction, a new big box store officially opened Wednesday in Wake Forest.

The Super Wal-Mart is located near the old Weavexx Plant.

A year and a half ago, the fight over the store split the town. Mayor Vivian Jones led the charge to keep Wal-Mart away, fearing the store will hurt small business owners in town.

The store also handed out $15,000 in donations to local groups, including $5,000 to the Wake Forest Downtown Revitalization Program.
