DURHAM, N.C. — A 70-year-old Durham woman was recovering at home Tuesday after being hit by an SUV Monday night at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Genevee Dillard was waiting outside Terminal 2 for her daughter to pick her up after a trip to New York to visit her son when she was hit outside the baggage claim area.

Sheremy Dillard-Clanton said she saw her mother down as she pulled up to the terminal to pick her up.

"As I came around and I looked at her, I saw she was on the ground," Dillard-Clanton said Tuesday. "She said, 'I've lived 70 years, and I've never been hit by a car.'"

RDU police said Christopher Dashawn Mazyck had left his SUV running outside the terminal but forgot to put it in park as he got out. When he saw the vehicle rolling, he jumped back in and accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, according to investigators.

Dillard was treated at WakeMed for a back injury and released.

"She can't stand up straight. She can't walk. She was lying in the bed," her daughter said.

Two other people suffered minor injuries while trying to jump out of the way of the SUV, an airport spokesman said. Three signs were damaged as well, costing about $2,000.

Mazyck, 20, of Durham, was charged with a safe movement violation. Investigators said they don't expect further charges.

"I don't think it was malicious," Dillard-Clanton said. "Accidents, things happen, so I don't take it personal about what happened. It's just we want to make sure that my mom is OK."
