Golf Club Thefts Plague Clayton Community

Posted Updated

CLAYTON, N.C. — Thieves are breaking into cars in a Johnston County community and taking golf clubs. Police say golf clubs are easy to steal and easy to resell.

Clayton police believe a ring of thieves is responsible for 14 recent break-ins in the Glen Laurel neighborhood.

Pete Zsoldos says someone broke into his car, that was parked in the driveway, taking $1,600 worth of clubs.

"I'd very much like to see them caught," Zsoldos said. "I don't hold out much hope in getting the clubs back, but I'd certainly like to see them caught and stopped."

Sgt. James Herring of the Clayton Police Department call the thefts a crime of opportunity.

"They go into neighborhoods looking to see what types of valuables are in the vehicle and taking what they can grab the quickest," he said.

The head golf pro at Pine Hollow in Clayton says stealing golf clubs is becoming more common.

"First of all, they are very expensive. Titanium drivers have a $500 suggested retail. A used [club] would be anywhere from $300 to $350," he said.

Investigators say the same people could be responsible for thefts in North Raleigh. Police in Raleigh have made three arrests, but have not confirmed a connection to the Clayton cases.
