LUMBERTON, N.C. — Lumberton police are investigating a deadly fight in a hospital maternity ward.
Officers said the fight started while a woman was delivering a baby at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The hospital was placed on lockdown for three hours, with police surrounding every entrance.
After the woman gave birth to her baby, her father and boyfriend got into a argument. According to investigators, the woman's boyfriend, Billy Ray Oxendine, pulled a knife on the other man.
A security officer shot Oxendine, 37, when he refused to drop the weapon and reportedly charged the officer. He later died.
Hospital officials said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay. They also said that no other visitors or employees were hurt.
