Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The state Department of Correction is tightening procedures after an inmate shot himself inside a hospital.

Jackie Batts Jr. was being treated for chest pains when he attacked the officer guarding him. He got her gun in the struggle and fired it inside the hospital room.

Now, two officers are guarding Batts instead of one.

Officials also are reviewing procedures.

Batts used to be a correction officer at Central Prison.
