Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Green Beret accused of killing his young stepdaughter could face the death penalty.

A Cumberland County judge gave prosecutors the go-ahead to seek the maximum punishment in the case.

Prosecutors say Daniel Carlson starved and beat Andrea Chavarria. She died last August, days before her second birthday.

Carlson's wife, Karla, is also charged with first-degree murder.
