RALEIGH, N.C. — People traveling west on Interstate 40 Friday afternoon, including travelers to Raleigh-Durham Airport, have hit a standstill near Aviation Parkway in Wake County.
Westbound I-40 has been backed up just west of Aviation Parkway following a seven-vehicle accident. The wreck caused a major backup between the airport and Cary.
According to the Highway Patrol, the accident -- which happened shortly before 4 p.m. -- started when the driver of a sport utility vehicle lost control and crashed into the guardrail. That caused a chain-reaction wreck.
Most of the injuries were minor. But a female passenger was taken to UNC Hospitals.
Even though the accident scene was cleared after about an hour, traffic remained slow-moving through the area.
