Bond Reduced, Then Raised for Former UNC Lecturer Accused of Sex Crimes

Posted December 28, 2006

— Bond was reduced, then raised back for a former instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who turned into an international fugitive.

John Dye fled his home in Durham for the Dominican Republic earlier this year.  According to warrants, Dye fled after learning he was wanted on several counts of sexual abuse in October.

Authorities returned him to Durham Tuesday.  Dye was initially held in lieu of a $3 million bond. The bond was reduced to $300,000, but then raised back to $3 million.

Police say they uncovered more than 450 sexually explicit images showing Dye having sex with a girl between the ages of 15 and 16.

Age of consent is 16 in NC. We're not exactly talking about John Wayne Gacy here.

Why in the world would he keep pcitures of an act like that? It's bad enough he's raping underaged teens. Works at a university but likes little high school kids. Sick. Maybe the state shouldn't have reduced the bond to begin or at least have taken his passport.
