Officer Michael Cole pulled over a vehicle on Fiske Street just before 9 a.m. after observing the driver, Carl Mason, drop off a known prostitute in an area where the police department had received numerous complaints of prostitution.
After stopping Mason, Cole found that there was also an insurance stop on the vehicle. During the stop, Cole frisked Mason and found a handgun on him.
Both men struggled and Mason ran off, pointing his gun at Cole. The officer shot at Mason, but did not hit him.
Mason was taken into custody and has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, resisting a public officer and carrying a concealed weapon. He was also cited for possession of marijuana.
Authorities said Mason has a prior conviction for robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Cole has been returned to full duty and authorities are conducting an internal investigation.
