Ex-girlfriend, boyfriend arrested in Durham man's disappearance

Posted June 7, 2012

— The investigation into a Durham man's disappearance last month led authorities to search his ex-girlfriend's Asheboro home, where burnt vehicle parts and human remains were found, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities believe the remains belong to John Russell Morris, 31, who was last seen by friends on May 25. They were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill to be positively identified.

Morris spent that Friday at a Durham Bulls game and later told his roommate he was driving to Kroger. Instead, investigators believe, Morris went to visit his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Dawson Summey, at the home she shared with her current boyfriend, Shaun Michael Lundy.

Deputies say the two suspects tried to use Morris' credit card, which led them to search their home, at 516 Mount Sheppard Road, on Wednesday. They found evidence that some sort of struggle had taken place there, as well as burnt vehicle parts matching Morris' yellow Jeep and human remains.

Summey, 21, and Lundy, 24, were arrested early Thursday in Tazwell County, Va. They will be extradited to Randolph County to face murder charges.

Investigators said Summey and Morris were romantically involved. The relationship began while Morris lived in the Asheboro area, from 2004 to 2007.

Summey's grandmother, India Freedle, said her granddaughter is a prostitute with bipolar disorder and a drug addiction. She said Summey has a 2-year-old daughter and has trouble staying on her medication.

Morris sent money to Freedle periodically to help Summey pay rent because he feared if he sent the money directly, she would use it to buy drugs, Freedle said.

Shannon Ignatowski said she considered Morris, who was an only child and whose parents are deceased, to be part of her family. She said he helped Summey out of concern for her child.

"He'd bend over backwards for you, give you the shirt of his back," she said. "(Summey) has no concern for this child of hers. She has no concern for anybody."

Douglas Wright lived with Morris at a home on Kirk Road. He said his roommate was a kind and gentle soul.

"He's the nicest, most giving person you'd ever meet," Wright said. "He had a curiosity about him. It almost seemed he knew a little bit of everything."

eyeoneastsky..you don't have a clue reguarding this condition, just your opinion . I pray the family and friends find comfort that he (may) have been found, and is in a better place.

Drugs do not cause the Bi-Polar medical condition, it is the brain which has the issue, and you can be born with it. Look it up . FInding the right medication to treat it is difficult, and when they are manic, they do not want to take the meds as they feel fine at the time, and this leads many to have difficulty being productive, staying on tract with their meds. Add illegal drugs and it gets messy.

what in the world was he doing romantically involved (at 23-27) with a 13-17 year old girl!?!?!? if they were romantically involved between 2004 and 2007 then something is a little off...

    I agree...something isn't right.

I'm so sorry his kindness led to his death. Some people will take you for everything you have...including your life. Sounds like he was a good guy.

Take a good look at the girl's eyes. The eyes are the window to the soul. What I see in her "dead eyes" is a dead soul. There is something evil in their. I hope they seperate this female from all the other prisoners because she definitely will hurt again if given the chance. We will see more and more of this phenomenon as the drug culture rages out of control. I believe drug dealers should be shot on the spot. Look at all that Jason man did to Kathy Taft. He too was called bi-polar and was on drugs. Drugs are causing the Bi-polar condition. Why can't somebody besides me see that?

There is something so disturbing about the way drugs dull the senses and conscience and open the door to hell. These drugs people are taking are bringing people into contact with dark and evil entities who actually enter the person's mind and body to control them. This is not an excuse. The person who takes the drugs is to blame because everybody in this nation knows how dangerous and deadly drug usage is.

"Seriously, whatever happened to personal responsibility?"

What LBJ didn't kill off, the advent of ADD, ADHD, LD and other made-up "diseases" finished off.

I don't believe he was made go to her house at gun point so why did he go there? If they called him as someone said there would be a call on his phone and these people would have been found sooner. Probably went on his own and found another guy there so on and so forth.

WOW what imagination.. discovered alot from this article did we?? too bad you didn't read the article references, that he has always helped the needy even working in soup kitchens and that his friends say he helps anyone he can whose down and out on luck.. also you'd of read that he's been supporting her through the grandmother so it's obvious he cared for this girl even years later and wanted to help her lost soul as well as the others. While your imagination is at it why couldn't she have sent word through grandmother to come to her place and she was lying in wait for him?? just asking..
