CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill Town Council on Monday night held a public forum on a proposal to change the name of Airport Road to MLK Boulevard. But the council did not vote on a name change, deciding instead to create a special committee to develop recommendations for how best to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The council reportedly received considerable public comment on the proposal to rename Airport Road. The council voted to establish a special committee to consider the creation of memorials to the life and legacy of Dr. King, including the renaming of Airport Road.

The council will nominate candidates at its meeting on Sept. 7 and make appointments to the special committee on Sept. 13.

The committee will comprise a diverse group of citizens,, ncluding those who are proposing a renaming and those affected by a renaming. It also will include members of the council and people who are familiar with community history.

Public forums on the renaming issue have been held April 19, May 24 and June 14.
