Clayton Woman Injured, Passenger Killed In Johnston County Wreck

Posted Updated

CLAYTON, N.C. — The driver of a pickup truck was injured and her passenger killed in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

According to the Highway Patrol, Deborah Ann McMullen, 51, of Clayton, was driving westbound on I-40, traveling with one passenger. McMullen ran off the road into the median on the left, overcorrected, lost control, and the vehicle flipped over six times.

Investigators said the vehicle finally came to a rest on the westbound side. The I-40 westbound lane was shut down and was reported to be backed up for miles, with traffic rerouted at N.C. 210.

Neither McMullen nor her passenger was wearing a seatbelt, and both were pinned inside the vehicle.

The passenger, identified as 53-year-old Patricia Hatcher Dosdall, from Knoxville, Tenn., died at the scene.

McMullen was airlifted to Duke with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. She was in stable condition Monday morning.

There has been no word on whether charges will be filed against McMullen.
