CLAYTON, N.C. — Clayton police have charged a woman with attempting to kill her husband.

Suzanne Brown, 46, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, after a shooting Saturday sent her estranged husband to the hospital with a chest wound. The shooting occurred shortly after 4 p.m. at 131 Gracie Lane in the Garrison subdivision.

A neighbor called police to report hearing a shot. Upon arriving at the scene, Clayton officers observed Hopkins sitting in a neighbor's yard with a 38-caliber handgun on the ground beside her.

When officers entered Hopkins' residence, they found her estranged husband, Johnny Hopkins, 49, on the floor with a bullet wound to his chest. He was transported to WakeMed Trauma Center by Clayton EMS and taken to surgery.

Johnny Hopkins' condition was unknown Saturday evening.
