CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Cumberland County is taking a new approach to stop the revolving door of inmates being mistakenly released.
County Manager James Martin changed his mind and decided he will start a new ID system for inmates. He originally rejected the proposal when asked to include it in the $608 million budget proposal to county commissioners.
In the last year, jailers accidentally released six inmates. Even after the chief jailer was demoted, the problems continued.
The cost for the system is $15,000. County officials hope to have it in place this summer.
