RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police say a man who is considered a danger to himself and the public has escaped from
Dorothea Dix Hospital.
According to police, 46-year-old Richard Whitfield was granted a one-hour pass from the facility at 5 p.m. Thursday but never came back.
Police will not say why Whitfield is a patient at Dix.
Whitfield is white, with grayish-brown long hair and a full beard. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds.
He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans.
Anyone with any information about Whitfield or his whereabouts is urged to call police.
