— Police in Galax, Va., arrested a Wake County man Wednesday afternoon after finding his wife's body in his truck, authorities said.

The arrest ended a bizarre episode for the Wake County Sheriff's Office, which had received a call at 9 a.m. about a body at a home on Creedmoor Road.

A neighbor called 911 to report seeing a body at 14925 Creedmoor Road, north of Falls Lake, but when deputies arrived, they couldn't find anything.

The homeowners, Sonny and Sherry Howard, were not there either.

Deputies wrapped yellow crime-scene tape around the property and searched the area, even obtaining search warrants to go inside the home.

Hours later, Galax police took Sonny Howard into custody, and found the body of his wife in the bed of the pickup truck he was driving, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said.

Investigators tracked Sonny Howard in Galax by following the signal on his cellphone.

Sonny Howard, 42, was charged with being a fugitive from justice and will be officially charged with murder once he is extradited to Wake County, authorities said. There's no word on when that is expected to happen.

Investigators have not determined where Sherry Howard, 50, died. They haven't released any information on how she died, either.

"We do not know if it occurred here or not," Harrison said. "That is what we have to piece together."

Sonny Howard has multiple prior convictions for robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, communicating threats, resisting a police officer, larceny and damage to property, according to state Division of Adult Correction records.

The reason news media reported this incident was in Wake Forest is this location's address is Wake Forest. Most of the long time residents in this area are relatives or definitely knew Sherry. She grew up here Sunny did not. In all incidences people should seek the truth before opening their mouth. Thanks to the Sherriff's department and the caller for being deligent!

If you keep criminal-style company, it's likely you will be victimized at some point. That is a very unfortunate fact for this lady.

I feel so bad for son. He is friends with my son, who said vicims son was at school on Wednesday. Obviously oblivious to the horrific events. My son says he really loved his mama so much & that she was an extremely sweet lady. So tragic & avoidable.

I go past this house twice a day, it is in Wake county. Coming fron Raliegh, Granville County line does not start until Old Weaver Trail. So nothing has happened in Granville county. Thats why there are wake county sheriffs there.

Has anyone seen a photo of the victim on any news site?

    Hubby looks like a mutant.

Storchheim - his comment was for me :)

Yes Granville County is normally pretty quiet and I guess that's what makes a story such as this such a huge shock for a lot of folks. Frankly, I'm fine with that. When I was younger I may have thought 'city living' was a better alternative, but I never left the area and now I'm glad I chose to stay.

As to the story, again I say RIP Sherry. Those of us who have known you for a long time will miss your beautiful smile and your outgoing personality.

foghat001 - Not sure what was meant about Granville county b/c it is pretty quite around here for the most part. The last big murder that I remember was the Morris case which happened several years ago and like this one the hubby was arrested (but it was a year later after her remains were found). This one that just happened is really just over the Wake Co line. I've lived in the area all my life and sure you hear of break ins every once in a while but murders aren't that common. Just pay attention to the news and you will notice that several of the surrounding counties are much worse where murder and other horrible crimes are a weekly thing...sometimes daily.

foghat001, not trying to argue, but what did you mean about Gville co? It's usually pretty quiet...the birdfights were the last big news, we don't have much violent crime.

I too used to drive past there and the houses always looked so normal, really, a few shady areas in Creedmoor itself near the freeway but that was it.

""The first 10 posts to this story are a perfect example of why people shouldn't make flip comments until they know more. One of the later posters mentions a son. I'm sorry for his losses.""...Glass Half Full

I was one of the first 10, and my comment wasnt intended to be "flip". Keep in mind that the actual story has changed since the comments were left. I still stand by my first comment and find it fitting to what the story originaly stated. I do hate that the body did end up being a dead one. But I am thankful for everyone involved that the body was located, and that the person who probably killed her was captured before he could dispose of it. I'm sure that he had a "plan", and thanks to the neighbor, and the work of the police, he was stopped before he could carry his plan out. I sure wish someone could have been notified and helped out before a life was lost. Had it not been for the neighbor, this would have been a "missing person" case.
