A Warren County teenager was in critical condition Monday after a hit-and-run over the weekend, authorities said.

Cody Flowers, 15, was in a medically induced coma at Duke University Hospital in Durham, his mother, Susan Walker, said Monday afternoon. He suffered from several skull fractures and a broken right arm.

Investigators say Flowers was walking northbound along U.S. Highway 1 – about a mile from his home – around 11:45 p.m. Saturday when he was struck and left along the road.

Residents in the area reported hearing a loud noise, and when they checked, found Flowers near the roadside. They called 911 and stayed with him until help arrived.

"I am beside myself, as a mother, livid that somebody could do that and just keep going," said Ellen Paynter, who lives nearby. "Anybody who can just keep going after they hit somebody is a downright heartless person."

Witnesses said they didn't see what kind of vehicle hit the teen but that the driver-side mirror was left behind at the wreck site.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol would not confirm that detail but said investigators have located a suspect vehicle.

No one has yet been charged in the case.

A young life stolen!

Praying the Lord will provide strength for Cody's family. No one should have to go through a tragedy such as this. The driver will not have to just answer to a human judge for this. Whether it's on this Earth on not, he/she will receive a just punishment one day.

My son went to school with Cody. I heard that he passed away yesturday morning.

This poor young fellow passed away yesterday. So sad!

My daughter was the one that heard the hit. She sent her boyfriend out to see what the noise was. They believed they would find someone with a tire blown out. While 911 was on the way, my daughter called me frantic, while her boyfriend and his family stayed with him. It is a horrible thing to have happened. I pray the family makes it through this. I am also under the impression that the vehicle that hit him was passing another vehicle when this occured, although I am not 100% but, if that was the case, it would offer some insight and still arise more questions as to how the driver could not have seen this boy.
