Fire crews said they received reports about a house in Mebane on fire Monday morning. When crews arrived to put out the fire, they found 10-year-old Myiesha Bishop in the back yard with a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators said 37-year-old Rufus Bishop shot his daughter then tried to burn the house down with her inside. Luckily, Myiesha escaped from the house. Officials think she jumped out a second-story window.
Authorities said Rufus Bishop ran and hid in a drainage pipe. An hour-long standoff with police ended with police luring him out with a cigarette. They later used a stun gun to take him into custody.
Authorities said Myiesha is a fourth-grader at South Mebane Elementary School. She is listed in critical condition at University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Authorities believe an argument between Rufus Bishop and his wife, Karen, on Friday led to the incident. The couple separated earlier in the year.
Bishop's co-workers describe him as an outgoing and friendly man. He is in the Alamance County Jail.
