Cumberland County authorities believe the body of a missing Dunn man may be in the Cape Fear River.

William Medford Dennis, 73, was last seen alive in the company of Mary Ann Webb, Michael Philon and Tahishei Harrison on April 28.

The three suspects are currently in the Cumberland County Detention Center, charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon, after Alton Smith was shot and left for dead in Cumberland County.

After that shooting, the suspects reportedly went to Dennis' residence, where he told his roommate he was taking them to Fayetteville.

Dennis' car later was recovered in a Frederick, Md., shopping center. Authorities said the suspects were involved in a multistate crime spree.

Dennis' disappearance is now being investigated as a homicide. They now believe Webb killed Dennis and then someone dumped him in the river.

A search and rescue dive team spent Thursday, attempting to locate Dennis' body.
