SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators moved one step closer to figuring out why a 24-year-old woman was found dead Friday along Interstate 40 after a concert.

The Sampson County medical examiner says Merritt Ennis suffered massive trauma to her head. He believes Ennis could have been hit by a car.

Investigators are still treating the case as foul play, not a hit-and-run.

They are collecting evidence from a vehicle and waiting on complete autopsy results.
