Goldsboro, N.C. — A 31-year-old Goldsboro man is accused of stabbing his brother to death early Saturday, but neighbors say the killing was an accident.
Alonza Ervin Barnes faces a murder charge in the death of his brother, Charles Barnes Jr., 35, who was stabbed at their 808 N. Virginia St. home around 1 a.m. Saturday.
Police haven't said what led to the stabbing, but neighbors said it was an accident during a fight over a woman.
The woman tried to attack Alonza Barnes, neighbors said, and he lunged at her to retaliate but stabbed his brother instead.
"I saw a freak accident. That's all it was," said a neighbor, who claimed to see the stabbing but didn't want his name used. Goldsboro man charged with killing brother
Neighbors said the brothers were friendly with everyone and genuinely loved each other.
"I don't think Alonza meant to kill his brother, honest to God. He didn't mean it," the neighbor said.
Alonza Barnes was placed in the Wayne County jail and denied bond. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.
