— A 31-year-old Goldsboro man is accused of stabbing his brother to death early Saturday, but neighbors say the killing was an accident.

Alonza Ervin Barnes faces a murder charge in the death of his brother, Charles Barnes Jr., 35, who was stabbed at their 808 N. Virginia St. home around 1 a.m. Saturday.

Police haven't said what led to the stabbing, but neighbors said it was an accident during a fight over a woman.

The woman tried to attack Alonza Barnes, neighbors said, and he lunged at her to retaliate but stabbed his brother instead.

"I saw a freak accident. That's all it was," said a neighbor, who claimed to see the stabbing but didn't want his name used. Goldsboro man charged with killing brother Goldsboro man charged with killing brother

Neighbors said the brothers were friendly with everyone and genuinely loved each other.

"I don't think Alonza meant to kill his brother, honest to God. He didn't mean it," the neighbor said.

Alonza Barnes was placed in the Wayne County jail and denied bond. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.

Oh well..if he was really trying to stab the women...stupid police should have just let by gones be by gones. This is the kind of thinking that is leading Goldsboro straight to the path Fayetteville on.

Why would two brothers want to fight over a trifling female? That is the really sad part, NOBODY man or woman is worth fighting over. They should have just called the police and both brothers would have been better off.

So if he had stab her instead of his brother it would not had been an accident?

So he was trying to stab her, right? Why won't you print this WRAL? ConcernedNCC

ConcernedNCC, didn't they print the above statement? It looks to me like you copied and pasted this from WRAL.

I guess that's what happens when you lunge at someone with a knife; sometimes you "accidentally" stab the wrong person. Whether he meant to kill his brother or this woman, he obviously meant to do it; it clearly wasn't "accidental"

414tater:You have no idea how long it took nor some of the fair comments I've made before that were never printed.

I can see someone firing a gun, missing, and hitting someone else, but a knife? A hand-held knife is a contact weapon. How can you miss with a hand-held knife and kill someone else?
