SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The Johnston County district attorney has dropped charges against a man arrested by a crooked detective.
Last month, former detective Fulton Stanley pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice.
Stanley admits falsifying a report saying Michael Barefoot had confessed to crimes. Barefoot, in fact, had not confessed.
Stanley was fired last fall.
