PigPals of North Carolina is the state's only potbellied pig rescue. The nonprofit organization is run from a home in a Fuquay-Varina subdivision.
At any one time, Penny Yocum cares for as many as 60 pigs.
In February, after neighbors complained, the town's planning department ruled that PigPals was a business and violated the home occupancy ordinance.
"It's horrid," neighbor Bob Schultz said. "It smells so bad you don't want to go out of your house."
"I examined the place and by all accounts, they were well taken care of. If they can have that many pigs and smell that good, I have no problem with it myself," said Jay Baker, a Wake County animal control officer.
PigPals appealed to the town's Board of Adjustment Monday night.
The board delayed its decision until June 14.
