GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A 21-year-old man who was shot in the parking lot of a neighborhood convenience store in Goldsboro Thursday morning died inside the store before officers arrived on the scene, police said.

Khyrie Roberts was standing outside the Madison Grill and Grocery on Holly Street around 11:20 a.m. when he was struck by a bullet. Witnesses said they heard more than a dozen gunshots.

It wasn't clear whether Roberts was the target of the shooting.

After being wounded, he went inside the store where he ran into his cousin, 20-year-old Emanuel Gatling, who lives in the nearby Fairview Homes. Gatling said Roberts fell into his arms and they both fell to the floor.

"It hurt me so bad. Right now, I'm smiling, but inside it's bothering me, tearing me up," Gatling said. "He died just looking at me with his eyes open."

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police at 919-580-4203 or Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255.
