— A 21-year-old man who was shot in the parking lot of a neighborhood convenience store in Goldsboro Thursday morning died inside the store before officers arrived on the scene, police said.

Khyrie Roberts was standing outside the Madison Grill and Grocery on Holly Street around 11:20 a.m. when he was struck by a bullet. Witnesses said they heard more than a dozen gunshots.

It wasn't clear whether Roberts was the target of the shooting.

After being wounded, he went inside the store where he ran into his cousin, 20-year-old Emanuel Gatling, who lives in the nearby Fairview Homes. Gatling said Roberts fell into his arms and they both fell to the floor.

Such a sad and tragic story. May he RIP and his cousin have help in coping with such grief.

I'm sorry I must be missing the rest of the written story. No where in this story does it say they were "stealing" nor does it say they were "involved with drugs or a gang" so I'm not sure exactly where some of you are getting your comments from. Racism perhaps? Let's change the color on these men's faces and see how many posts would say "oh no, so sad for the family that must be horrible". People and their discrimination and hatred amaze me.

"Just another of how gang/drug violence is taking over our country. It has spread to smaller towns like Goldsboro. Where next? Smithfield, Lillington?

All right, you made the statement, now come up with one single fact to back it up!

"If they weren't going after the one they killed, they were trying for his cousin. Looks like this duo stole from the wrong person.

No, it looks like you are talking out of a place on the body that we are not allowed to mention here. There is nothing whatsoever to point to your conclusion.

Where di you people get the idea he was doing anything wrong when he was shot? Just wondering. Some of these comments sounds like they are saying he got what was coming to him.

Goldsboro has become the wild west anymore.

WRAL - when you quote someone you MUST use their exact words. This man being interviewed by Ken clearly states "He died just looking at me with HIS eyes open." I laugh in the face of journalism, ugh.

Maybe now that he knows what it feels like to have a family member die in his arms, maybe, just maybe, he will think about that before he pulls the trigger and inflicts that kind of pain on another.

"karma, if someone has to explain to you why a murder is a tragedy, then you seriously need to seek help professionaly. What a heartless and cold comment to make. Shame on you.

    Agreed, and well said.
