RALEIGH, N.C. — Severe weather rolled into the WRAL-TV viewing area Sunday, leaving plenty of damage in its wake.

Around 5 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a tornado about five miles southwest of Fuquay-Varina and about nine miles north of Lillington.

Some of the worst reports of damage came out of southwest Edgecombe County near Pinetops and Macclesfield.

Officials said trees are down and a number of homes are damaged in those areas. Some people even lost parts of their rooftops and front porches.

Rainfall of up to an inch per hour caught some people in Johnston County by surprise. Firefighters had to rescue them as the waters rose around their stranded car that was stuck under a bridge.

Authorities said the people were a little shaken up, but they are OK.
