RALEIGH, N.C. — The recent crash in Paris of a bus carrying an all-star soccer team has claimed another life.
Julian Brown, a teenager from Charlotte, died in a Paris hospital. The 13-year-old had been in critical condition and in a coma since the April 18 accident.
Brown was one of 18 boys from across North Carolina, all ages 13 and 14, playing on a select soccer team that had been invited to France to compete in the Nantes Tournament. They were on their way to a Paris airport to return to North Carolina when the accident happened.
Matt Helms, 13, of Jacksonville, N.C., died in the crash. A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday in Jacksonville for Helms, who was a student at Hunter's Creek Middle School.
Brown attended Myers Park High School, where news of his death hit hard Monday. About 100 students asked for counseling to help cope with the loss.
The school principal said Monday that Brown was an ideal young man and a "very special person."
Another team member from Charlotte remained in a French hospital on Monday.
