LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Lumberton police officer was arrested Wednesday by agents with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Lt. Leon Oxendine, who spent 20 years with the Lumberton Police Department, faces charges of witness tampering and lying to a grand jury.

Authorities said they have been investigating the case since May 2002. They said they cannot discuss the details until Oxendine goes before a federal magistrate.

"We are glad that it is coming to an end. It has been going on for quite awhile," said Lumberton Police Chief Robert Grice.

Authorities said they have made two other arrests in the case. One of the suspects in the case has agreed to testify against Oxendine in exchange for a lesser charge.

For now, Oxendine is currently on leave without pay.
