A Camp Lejeune Marine was stabbed to death by another Marine in a bar fight in Washington, D.C. early Saturday, police told CNN.

WASHINGTON — A Camp Lejeune Marine was stabbed to death by another Marine in a bar fight in Washington, D.C. early Saturday, police told CNN.

A Camp Lejuene spokesman said the victim, Philip Bushong, 23, was a member of the 2nd Marine Division based at in North Carolina.

The alleged attacker, Michael Joseph Poth, 23, is stationed at the Marine Barracks in the nation's capital.

Capt. Jack Morton, a spokesman for the Marine Barracks, said the fight began in a bar on Eighth Street near the Washington, D.C., barracks. Washington's Metropolitan Police told CNN that the men had a verbal exchange and that witnesses heard Poth use a homophobic slur.

Morton said the fight spilled out into the street, and Marine Barracks guards jumped in and subdued Poth. Bushong was stabbed multiple times and died of his injuries at a local hospital.

Poth was transferred to the custody of the Metropolitan police, who have called him a suspect but have not yet charged him.
