Early Sunday, a vehicle going too fast on Dillard Drive struck the berm in front of Drew Edwards' home, preventing the vehicle from ending up in the front yard.
Without the berm, tire tracks show the vehicle would have slammed into a large pine tree in the front yard.
Last summer, before the berm was constructed, a pick-up truck crashed into the pine tree. One person died.
That was the worst of six wrecks over six years that all ended up in the Edwards' front yard.
The safety berm needs repairs and the homeowners believe the DOT needs to go a step further.
"I hope that they will at least put down rumble strips or at least look at it a little more seriously now that we know the berm will work. [The strips] will help keep people from hitting the berm. It might be enough to jar them into hitting their brakes or to pay more attention," homeowner Drew Edwards said.
The DOT did not know about the latest incident until it received a call from WRAL.A team will go to Dillard Drive to assess the damage and make recommendations on what to do next.
The driver in Sunday's wreck was not injured.
