The accident occurred near mile marker 57, east of the city, just after 9 a.m.
The Highway Patrol says Douglas Collimore, 39, of Jackson, New Jersey, was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition with an RV camper in tow when he lost control of the vehicle and flipped over.
He was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
Two of the four southbound lanes of the interstate were shut down for about an hour in order to clear debris from the road. Traffic was backed up for several hours.
Collimore, his wife and three daughters, ages 8, 6 and 4, were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Collimore is listed in stable condition. His family was treated and released.
