Raleigh, N.C. — CrossFit RDU was the gym of choice for Raleigh police Officer Adam W. Young before he was shot in the line of duty. On Saturday, members of the gym in Raleigh and a dozen affiliated clubs participated in a workout to raise money for Young's medical and household expenses as he rehabilitates from his injuries.
Young was a member of the tactical team that tried to enter the apartment of Steven Gregory Meyer, 48, on Feb. 6 after Meyer barricaded himself in his Brier Creek apartment. A mental health professional called police after Meyer threatened violence against himself and others.
After hours of negotiation outside Meyer's apartment at 9321 Bothwell St., police attempted to force the door. Meyer fired from inside, hitting Young multiple times.
"Adam Young was a police officer who risked his life for the safety of others, so what we are doing is giving the community an opportunity to say thank you and do a workout to honor that sacrifice," Officer Mat Van Antwerp said Saturday.
Several members of Young's Selective Enforcement Unit participated in Saturday's event.
Young was there as an observer. When he can return to active duty is still to be determined.
