Charles Holten Scott, 49, of Elkview, W. Va., was in the bucket of a hydraulic lift when it was struck by a car in a work zone on Poole Road around 6:15 a.m.
The lift was stretched across lanes of traffic and did not have lights on it. The driver had little time to react in the dark, in the construction zone.
The car slammed into the bucket, flinging Scott some 30 feet before he landed on the pavement. He was in critical condition Thursday night at WakeMed.
The driver of the car, Timothy Earl Porter, 33, of Fuquay-Varina, was taken to WakeMed for observation.
Raleigh police, the Department of Transportation, OSHA and the contractor, Vecellio Grogan, are investigating.
No charges are expected to be filed.
According to the state, the contractor has no record of serious safety violations in North Carolina.
DOT officials said they hope to learn from the accident and possibly change procedures to make work zones safer.
