SILER CITY, N.C. — Chatham County sheriff's deputies have arrested Jose Martin Chavez-Cervantes, 41, on a charge of first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in connection with the stabbing death of an Asheboro man.

Deputies said they arrested Chavez-Cervantes as he was attempting to break into a vehicle on Stockyard Road and took him into custody without incident. He is being held without bond.

The arrest followed Tuesday's stabbing of Richard Alston, 43, and Sandy Alston, 30, at 509 Colonial Park Road in Siler City. Officers said that when they arrived at the scene, they found Richard Alston, of Asheboro, deceased and Sandy Alston, of Siler City, seriously injured with multiple stab wounds.

Sandy Alston was transported to Chatham Hospital, treated and later released.
