RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina State Fair came to a rainy close Sunday, but not before breaking some records.

Officials said attendance was down a bit this year, but in line with the 10-year average.

"If you go back to last year, we had 795,000 (people in) attendance," said Department of Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. "This year, we had -- of the days that are recorded now, seven of the nine days have been above last year."

Attendance numbers on Saturday, however, reached a record for the highest single-day total with 145,461 people in attendance, thanks in part to beautiful weather. That beat last year's high of 111,634 and the second highest single-day total of about 139,000 in 1984.

Most fairgoers WRAL talked with Sunday said the 10-day event had been a success despite the rain.

"We thought the rain was going to put a damper on things," said Jim Trenner. "But it's actually been pretty fun."

Organizers are already gearing up for next year's fair.
