Carson Thomas and Mackinzie Wessels, both 13, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital. Thomas was in critical condition Sunday and Wessels was in good condition Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police charged the driver, Luis Delgado Jesus, 23, of Mount Olive with driving without a license, expired registration and expired inspection. The crash was being investigated and more charges were possible.
Police said the students were hit as they walked across a road next to their school before classes Friday. Investigators said the two were crossing with the "walk" signal from the crosswalk sign.
Both of the students live on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and have parents in Air Force, said Seymour Johnson spokesman Capt. Allen Herritage. The schools are just outside a gate to the base.
